What does Regen Network do?

Regen Network realigns the agricultural economy with ecological health by creating the global market for planetary stewardship. Using a distributed ledger and modern remote sensing technology, our team is creating new tools for how humanity relates to its environment.

How does your technology improve the ability to monitor ecological change?

We are creating the peer to peer infrastructure that allows anyone to propose a protocol for the accurate measurement of specific environmental outcomes. We then invite existing academic and scientific communities to comment and upgrade those proposals. Over time, there will be hundreds of different, well accepted, scientifically robust protocols for understanding, with a high degree of accuracy, the ecological impact on any specific piece of land.

Why do you need a blockchain?

The Regen Ledger provides the project three key elements, without which Regen Network’s promise to create a network dedicated to monitoring, verifying and contracting or paying for ecological health outcomes would be impossible.

Data Verification. Data provenance, and quality can be tracked and authenticated.

Smart Contracts. Contracts can be issued for ecological outcomes, such as carbon sequestration or water quality between users on the network.

Payments. Users can pay for data, and ecological health contracts.

Why are you building your own blockchain?

Security, Governance, Scalability, Speed, and above all Usability. We are building as a domain specific blockchain using the Cosmos SDK. Our network consensus is run on Tendermint Core and we have a custom application layer enabling an immutable ledger of ecosystem health. Building on the Cosmos SDK means we are in the in the cosmos ecosystem of zones and hubs which is creating a scalable and interoperable system of blockchains which can be programmed for specific use cases and have governance autonomy. We aim to be THE global ecological side chain and will work to achieve interoperation with Ethereum through Peggy and Ethermint.

Why do you need a token?

The XRN token serves two key functions; to program the rules that make an ecological data commons and marketplace possible and to bring together a community of shared interest in service to strengthening and regenerating the living systems that we need to support life on earth.

What is Regen Network's governance model?

Regen Network’s blockchain will be governed by a consortium of organizations. These organizations will be able to delegate votes to professional compute nodes that maintain the blockchain consensus for the system.

Why are you using Tendermint Consensus Engine?

Regen Network vetted every Open Source Distributed Ledger solution and Tendermint was found to have the right mix of security, deployability, and flexibility for Regen’s Ecological Domain use case.

Why aren't you using some DPoS based blockchain, like EOS, or Lisk?

DPoS based blockchains are certainly interesting, and we’re keeping an eye on them. Our primary concern so far is that they tend toward plutocracy based around financial interests. Look at the state of the Lisk system. Some 80% of the earning spots are locked up by members of LiskElite group. They don’t contribute much to the ecosystem, yet they’ve managed to almost completely dominate the system by requiring you to vote for each of them in order to get paid out by any of them. How can Regen Ledger be energy efficient?

By incorporating a model of human governance, instead of machine governance, Regen Network is designed for energy efficiency. As opposed to bitcoin’s energy use, which is on par with a medium sized industrial country, Regen Network will have the energy needs of an office building.

What is Ceres?

Ceres is a domain specific programming language that we are building. It is designed for writing contracts to take advantage of the full suite of remote ecological sensing protocols being developed on Regen Network.

Why do you need Ceres?

We need some way to express ecological contracts in a way that makes it easy for programmers and also non-technical people to verify their correctness. While some existing programming languages may have strong enough static type systems for programmers to verify the correctness of contracts (ex. F* and Idris), the scope of these languages is still too broad for non-technical users. In order for contracts to really be trusted by a broader base of users, we believe that there needs to be some way to see what a contract says in visual and human language representation - something along the lines of “after one year, if the results of this data analysis are positive, you will receive X tokens/hectare”. This is a central design goal of Ceres and so far no existing programming language allows for this sort of representation.

How does the verification process work?

The level of verification and authentication of ecological health depends on the ecosystem and the needs of the contract. For instance, there are many ecological contracts that can have simple verification using publicly available satellite information that has been hashed into Regen Ledger to oracleize it. Examples of this type of contract include deforestation and reforestation, tree planting, no till agriculture. Deeper assessments such as carbon sequestration require a more robust verification methodology that can include comparison to regional baseline and research data and third party measurement.

Which protocols are you developing and why?

There are several criteria to be taken into account in protocol development. Technical feasibility, how it would compare to existing industry methods, how well the underlying data can encourage positive change in our ecology, whether there is an existing market demand, if so, at what cost points, how much human ground truthing is required, and finally would such a protocol be positioned to actually influence current systems of production. With all of these factors in mind, here are some of the protocols currently in the works.

Till / No Till - highly feasible via satellite, little to no ground truth, strong market demand, has a great positive effect on building and maintaining soil health.
Cover Cropping - highly feasible via satellite, similar to till/no till in most respects.
Crop Identification - also highly feasible, some market and policy value
Pollinator Strips - very feasible, strong environmental/production/social benefits
Fire Risk Assessment - satellite/drone, can track leaf moisture and fire breaks
Riparian Zones - medium high feasibility, extraordinary environmental benefits
Erosion - medium satellite feasibility, needs more groundtruth, strong production
Ocean Plastic - medium satellite feasibility, could easily identify cleaning crews
Endangered Species - medium satellite / groundtruth balance, identify habitat
Air Quality - satellite and IOT in urban areas, strong policy incentives
Urban Trees - high feasibility with satellite, good policy incentives
Above Ground Biomass - satellite feasible, could be used in a variety of programs
Biodiversity Index - primarily satellite, more feasible with fixed wing drones, policy
Water Quality - also a policy piece, Satellite + IOT, and groundtruth
Carbon Sequestration - requires a lot of initial groundtruth, however with sufficient amassing of data, possible shift to Modeling based on Satellite Imagery correlatives. Very strong market and policy demand.
Polycropping/Agroforestry - might require more groundtruth/drones initially, and could perhaps be moved up into satellite. Huge ecological and social benefits.


What is Regeneration?

Regeneration is the growth of vitality, viability and evolutionary capacity of a system. As defined by our mentor Carol Sanford, the seven first principles of regeneration are: whole, potential, reciprocity, essence, nestedness, nodal, and development. You can read more here.

How is Regenerative different from Organic?

In the food industry, “organic” denotes foods that have been certified to meet a specific list of practices as legislated in a corresponding country. Generally, these practices are accepted to be superior for human and ecological health over 'conventional' practices.

That said, Organic food can still be grown in ways that degrade human and ecological health. Regenerative agriculture seeks to increase both human and ecological health.

Groups like Rodale Institute and Patagonia have been working on a Regenerative Agriculture Certification, although their platform does not necessarily reflect consensus amongst the broader community. Some groups have been emphasizing the importance of outcome-based certifications in the regenerative space (as opposed to practice-based), such as Savory Institute’s Land to Market program.

Agriculture is the second largest global producer of greenhouse gas emissions. It’s also the critical industry supporting human civilization. And it’s becoming increasingly fragile, much more fragile than most people realize.

All land is deeply connected in biological processes and weather patterns. You can’t just ignore parts of it, what you do in one place, is always affecting others. Our land usage habits are constantly feeding back into the ecology that produces our food, water, fresh air, and biological stability.

Our only competition is ignorance and apathy. Other organizations who are determined to redesign economic systems so that they may be in service to the whole of life on our planet are our friends, our allies, and a great source of inspiration. How will you make money?

We will make money through fees on ecosystem services payments and verifications. Target industries are Supply Certifications ($290B), Climate Commitments ($120B), Carbon Markets ($57B), Corporate Social Responsibility ($20B).

Is data public or private?

User Data can be shared with the public, specific research organizations or kept private. With full access control always retained by the owner, users determine when to give access, to who, and when to revoke it. Users can manage their data from their own server, or opt to store it securely with one of our storage providers.

Who owns the data on the system?

Everyone retains full ownership of their data, always.

Do you intend to sell data?

Owners will be able to offer up their data for sale, or view existing market offers.

Is Regen Network decentralized?

Regen Network is governed by a democratic body which delegates votes through compute/validator nodes. Voting is transparent, and the incentive structures are designed to uphold truth about ecological information and create a contracting system to value ecological health. All stakeholders in the system benefit from this common good outcome and the cost to cheat or lie is much higher than the benefits.

How would you describe the constellation of entities referred to as Regen Network?

Regen Network is the overarching whole. Although we often refer to ourselves as Regen Network, the Network is not an organisation, but rather a community, a commons, a movement, and a network.

Regen Consortium is a network of purpose-aligned organizations that govern Regen Ledger (including token supply) and steward Regen Network as a whole. Each included organization has shown competency and focus in agriculture, environment, data, or economics. This governance body has been designed to be fair and agile while ensuring that the functional capabilities of the ledger itself match user demand. It is both an a-legal entity from the blockchain perspective, and a member of Regen Foundation from the legal perspective. Regen Foundation is currently a Delaware non-stock entity applying for 501(c)(3) status. It will be the home of the scientific research and core protocol development for Regen Network. It will also hold and manage a token endowment.

Regen Network Development, Inc. is a Delaware C-Corp running the token sale to capitalize the development of Regen Network. Much of the team you see listed on the website are housed out of RND. At a point deemed beneficial by both RND and the Foundation, much of the assets (including IP) of RND will be donated to the Foundation, and held from that point forward under an open source license.

How can I get involved?

Invest: There are two sales happening concurrently right now for the XRN token. The first is a Reg D token sale which can only involve US based accredited investors as the SEC defines it. The second sale is a Reg S sale that excludes “US persons” from participating, and there is not particular accredited investors statute in those regulations, but the laws of the domicile of the investor must be adhered to. How do I get XRN?

Regen Ledger is not yet live, so XRN are not yet available on exchanges. The only way to gain access to XRN at this moment is through our token sale via SAFTs.

What type of tokens are XRN?

The XRN token is a utility token launched on our own Tendermint BFT powered blockchain. It will be a functional sidechain of Ethereum and other primary cryptocurrencies through the Cosmos IBC protocol.

Are you listed on exchanges?

Regen Ledger is not yet live, so XRN is not yet available on exchanges. We have exchange partnerships in the works.

How many tokens will be created when?

At the Token Generation Event 755,952,381 XRN will be created. From that point forward, Regen Consortium will manage the token supply with a small annual increase distributed to community projects (up to 1 percent, varied up to 25 basis points each quarter).

What does XRN allow me to do?

XRN are the native token on Regen Network, and allow you to pay for requests on the network, such as tracking ecological state, or placing an ecological contract.


When will you launch the first version of regen Ledger?

Regen Ledger will be launched into the wild in 2019.

What are you developing first?

We are following user centric design and lean startup methods, building our product in iterations and testing with users, to ensure that we meet the needs of farmers first, and funders and other network users second.

What have you built so far?

The farmer interface for managing field data is being used by several of our partners. We are developing several sensing protocols. For example, our Till / No Till algorithm is currently capable of detecting till events in Romania and the Ukraine with a 99% accuracy through public Landsat and Sentinel data.

What are you working on now?

The first version of our distributed infrastructure for data management is moving along quickly, and we’re very excited to be able to share it. We're also laying the groundwork for much of our verification system.
